Day One:
- When you walk up to the check-in desk, a picture will fall from the wall. Then Miwako will give you your room key. You are staying in Room 24 on the second floor. Go through all the options of talking with Miwako.
- To get to your room, go down the hallway furthest from the front desk, or the left hallway and it's on the second floor, third door on the right.
- In the left corner, there are a few items that Nancy will need. The red folder contains information about the Ryokan Hiei. The green box contains Nancy's teaching things and the student's homework for each day. Grade each question by stamping beside the number, and stamp the overall grade at the top. When you turn around you will see a closet on the right with Nancy's suitcase. You will need to get a dictionary and a train pass.
- Explore the hallways. In the downstairs left hallway there will be a room with a blue banner. Click on it, and you will meet Rentaro, the ryokan's handyman. He tells you that you can only go in when the banner is red, for women. In the downstairs right hallway, you need to visit Room 18, where Takae is teaching Japanese culture. The first lesson is Japanese calligraphy and Nancy will learn to write her name. Pick up the brush and trace the symbols in numerical order. If you go outside of the lines too much you will have to start over by picking up a new piece of paper. When you're finished talk to Takae. In the back corner there is a small cabinet. Open the top drawer and there is a Japanese writing guide. You can also practice more calligraphy if you wanted to.
- When you leave the room, go right, left, then left again and you are in the garden. The small building is Rentaro' shed. Enter and talk to Rentaro. When you talk to him, he will tell you about nonogram puzzles. The inside cover gives directions on how to complete the puzzles. You don't have to complete the puzzle right when he gives it to you. When completed it should look like this:
Junior Nonogram 1
Senior Nonogram 1
- Give the completed puzzle back to Rentaro. Then he talks about Sudoku puzzles and wants you to solve one. The completed puzzle looks like this: Junior and Senior Sudoku 1
416/583/927
792/641/835
835/297/461
648/732/519
271/958/643
359/164/782
167/829/354
524/376/198
983/415/276
- Then give that puzzle back to Rentaro and he gives you a final puzzle: the Renogram and it should look like this when completed: Each time you complete a puzzle you will get another puzzle of that kind. If you complete all of each puzzle you will get something in the end. When you finish talking to Rentaro, continue to explore the garden.
This is puzzle one and two and they are both the same for Junior and Senior.
All Puzzle Solutions will be at the end of the walkthrough!
- This is all you can do for Day 1. Go back to your room and set your alarm for 1:00 a.m. Go downstairs to the front desk and notice that Miwako is gone now. You can now examine what's on the desk. Miwako's computer needs a password, so it's probably around the desk somewhere. Click on the brown box and Suki takes a swipe at you. Try not to do that again until later, or you will have to "try again." Look at the wall behind the desk. Click on the clipboard to read the instructions for the security system, which is the box on the wall next to it. You need five cards, and one is missing. You can't do anything with it for now. Go back to the room and set your alarm for 7:00 p.m. In the middle of the night there will be a spooky shadow. When Nancy wakes up and opens her window and the screen rips. Then you will go back to bed. That is the end of Day 1.
Day Two:
- When you wake up, check for more homework to grade. You will do this almost everyday. When you leave the room, you will be called by Bess. Go downstairs toward the entrance hall and you will hear some angry guests leaving. Go talk to Miwako about the guests and your torn screen.
- Go to the baths; the banner should be red now. Inspect the mirrors. Inspect the baskets to the right of the mirror. Go through the sliding doors to the left of the mirrors. Look at the wall behind the showers. Nancy will state that there is something missing. Take a bath if you want; taking regular baths will earn you something.
- Go back to Room 18 and Takae is ready to teach another lesson. This lesson is Origami and you have to place the papers in the right spot. Here is the solution:
The second drawer of the cabinet has an origami book. Read through and remember for later.
- Leave the room and talk to Rentaro in his shed. Talk to him about whatever you like and ask about the picture from the lobby. You will get a puzzle where you have to untangle some wires. When you finish that look at the papers inside. Go to Miwako and ask her about the certificate. Don't ask her to translate the article.
This is a video by arglefumph on how to solve the wire puzzle in Junior Mode.
- It's time to visit Yumi. Go outside the front doors of the ryokan. There is a sign that needs to be translated. Follow the sign to the train station. The Expo Station is at Matsue at the bottom of the map on the dark brown line. Find out what lines to follow to get there. You will only have to do this once for each station and then you can take the fast track back. These are the stations to follow: Nagori-Otsu-Aomori-Kochi-Tochigo-Seto-Niigata-Fuji-Iga-Matsue. At the Matsue Station take the flyer from the railing and exit the station. Yumi is at the Bento Counter and will teach you how to make the perfect bento box. There is no real solution to these because they are random, but there should always be a way to find out where one piece goes, and you should be able to build around it. Talk to Yumi about the ryokan and she will ask you to get more bento boxes and gives you her apartment key.
- Yumi's apartment is at Kurume Station. To get there from Matsue: Matsue-Iga-Kobe-Miyazaki-Urawa-Kurume. When you go inside the apartment you should get a picture message from Yumi. You will get several throughout the game. The bento boxes are on the counter when you first walk in. Look at the closet and all the things inside. Pick up the CD. Translate the circles in the sewing kit. Look at the book on the bed and take the card, see that the window beside the bed opens. Look at the computer. Notice it has a CD drive and insert the CD and watch. Look at the book on the desk about Shadow Puppets. Look also at the computer screen and there is a color coded password.
- Go back to the Matsue Station and talk to Yumi again. Ask her about her clothes and she will give you her password to make your own. But you have to make another bento box first. Go back to Yumi's apartment and click on the avatar button. Choose the correct shape on the right and place it according to the image below:
- You can now make your own avatars for your contact list. Make the avatar, the punch in the number. You can find the number by going to the contact, and pressing options. That is also where you can add the avatars that you make.
- Go back to the ryokan. For me, at this point something strange happened when I went upstairs towards my room. Call Bess and talk about the cat if you looked at it the night before. George should call later with info about the cat, but call her yourself it this never happens. The guy who sells the cat can tell George the commands, but you have to solve a monster sudoku puzzle for her. She will send it to the ryokan but you probably have to do something in the meantime so try talking to people. Miwako will tell you you have a delivery when you walk to the front desk. The Junior and Senior puzzles are different.
Red Puzzle Junior Orange Puzzle Senior
- Go back to your room and put the puzzle in an envelope from the red folder in your room. Give it to Miwako and she take care of it. Go back to your room and call Bess about the codes for Suki.
- Now you have to find someone who will translate the article for you. Rentaro, Takae, and Yumi all get mad about it. Miwako will get so furious that you will get kicked out of the game. But you should still try and get one of the other three to read it. Call Savannah if you got the card from her book at Yumi's apartment. You will talk to her assistant, Logan, and he will hang up on you. Call again and he will hang up on you again.
- Call Bess and George and they will help find a way to distract Logan at the expo. They will call you a little while later saying that they have distracted Logan. Call Savannah at that time and ask her all the questions. She says to drop the article at the front desk, in and envelope, and Logan will go get it. This option will only happen if you have asked two other people at the ryokan to translate it. Logan will message you about the article. Then go ask Miwako about it. She will cut you off.
- Set your alarm for 1:00 a.m. Go behind the front desk and do the new commands on Suki. The command to make her calm is Suki: Mate. While she is calm, look at the brown box. You have to solve it to open it.
- Move all panels down. Move middle panel left. Move all panels up. Move bottom panel right. Move middle panel left. Move top right panel right. Senior level: move top left panel left and middle panel right. Inside is a small tile and an envelope that you will have to translate.
- If it is still night two, the go to the baths and place the tile in the wall. If not, go back any time the baths are open to women. Set the tiles like this and watch Rentaro and Miwako have an arguement. This is all for Day Two.
Day Three
- Get up and grade papers. Then visit Room 18 where Takae has another lesson planned for you. When Takae is done talking about the item names, you have to place the name cards in front of the correct item. When you're done with that, go over to the cabinet and see that the teapot is in the largest spot. Go talk to Rentaro. If you saw the argument in the baths, he will ask you a for a favor. Go to the Pachinko Parlor at Kure Station.
- If you haven't already asked, ask Savannah about her book. She has no more copies left. Logan will call and ask to stop bothering them. Then call back and he will apologize for being so rude. He also asks if Nancy can help him go on a date with Bess. Take this chance to ask about the book again. He asks to help pick out the perfect outfit for Bess.
- Go to Yumi's apartment and use the avatar game to pick an outfit for Bess. Then send the image to Savannah's number. Logan will call and say he will give the book to Bess. George will call now or the next day saying they got the book. It will be at the front desk.
Day Four
- If you never got the book earlier, you should get it now. Read through it. Go to the pachinko parlor at Kure station. From the ryokan it’s: Misawa – Nagoya – Otsu – Aomori – Ube – Sakai – Kure. Check out the rewards machine. There will be a comic book Nancy wants, and also the cat collar for Rentaro. Go to the machines and play until you get the number of balls that you need for the prizes. To choose the prize, open the drawer, put the balls inside, and open the drawer with the prize you want inside. When you are done, remember to be the remaining balls out of the first drawer.
- Return to the ryokan and give the collar to Rentaro. He will leave and give it to Miwako. While he is gone, take the card with the star on it. If you have read the book, you can call Savannah and ask more about EVP and the room she stayed in. Read the comic book that you won.
- When Rentaro comes back to his shed, ask him about EVP. He will give you an EVP recorder. Go to the hotspots that Savannah mentioned in her book. They are behind the cherry blossom tree, the fireplace lobby which is also where the fish is hanging, the mirror in the baths, the hot spring in the baths, both upstair hallways. To record, choose a button and press the record button at the top. When you're done recording go back to your room. There will be wet footprints. Call Savannah about them. When you have nothing else to do, set your alarm for 1:00 a.m.
- Go back to Rentaro's shed. Place the recorder on the speakers on the right shelf. Listen to all the channels. You will hear Miwako and Yumi arguing on the channel that you recorded behind the cherry tree. Leave the shed, cross the bridge and turn right. Go into the water under the bridge. Pick up the key. Look at the stone. It is missing four rocks. You will need to search the garden for them. There are only four and they are all in the garden.
- Go to the lobby and look at the gardens book. It will tell you where to place the rocks on the stone tablet. Go back and place them. If you placed them right, a drawer will open. Go to Room 18 and open it with the key you found. On the floor where Takae sits there will be a red card to pick up. Get the teapot from the cabinet. Look at the origami book.
- Fold the paper like this: Mountain Fold, Fold to Front, Fold to Front, Fold Unfold, Fold to Back, Push Invert. If you messed up just press 'Start Over'. Go to the lobby and put the teapot on the hook by the fish. Wait for it to boil and put the password envelope over the steam. The password is Takakawa.
- Go back to Room 18 and look at the calligraphy book. Remember the symbols fo Ta Ka Wa in Hiragana. Go back to the computer and enter the password. Remember to enter the Ka symbol twice. Check the room records on both pages. Do the Mate command on Suki to put the Password envelope back in the box.
- With the red card from Room 18 you can now solve the security code on the wall. Place the cards in the order Blue, Red, Green, Orange, Purple. Move them until the box opens. Take the key. Go back to Rentaro's shed and take the screwdrivers from beside the speakers. If you have folded the paper from the stone tablet, use the screwdriver on the bamboo thing in the garden beside the bridge. Take the paper out and return to your room. Set alarm for 7:00 p.m.
- Investigate the hidden bath. Check out the wall over the table. The paper from the bamboo will automatically be placed beside it. But you still need another half. Go to Kure Station. Go into the photo booth where Yumi likes to make her pictures. You will need to print all seven pictures that she sent you. If you don't have all seven play Pachinko while you wait for them. While you are printing, print out the black and white picture as well.
- Look at one of the pictures in your inventory. A grid should pop up and you have to place the pictures for form Japanese numbers from the purple lines.
- Go back to the expo center and talk to Yumi. She wants you to make another Bento box and makes you miss the last train. She asks that you stay at her apartment. Look at the frog above the computer. Put in the numbers from the pictures. This will only work if you have talked to her about it and makes you stay at her place. Take the paper from the frog. Set your alarm for 7 p.m. The window will rattle during the night. Open it and get another warning.
Day Six
- Time to grade more homework. Then head to Room 39 and go to Room 33. Enter the hidden bath. Access the wall where you placed the first set of numbers. It forms a giant nonogram puzzle. The puzzle is different for Junior and Senior.
- Access the hidden compartment. Take the knife and the letter. Be ready for what's coming next! And exit the compartment. You are pushed into the water with a net over you. Quickly take the knife and cut the net in half. The knife will turn red at the points that you can cut it. You have limited time!
- Inspect the robotic ghost. Leave the baths and go talk to Takae about Kasumi. Go Rentaro's shed and find that he's not there. Go in and take the new recorder on the speaker. Also look at the pink paper on the counter. Translate it. Take the door-o-matic. Go up to Room 33. You can go through the door directly this time BUT SAVE BEFORE YOU GO IN! This way you can see an alternate ending based on what you choose for the bad guy.
- Go through the door. Talk to Rentaro. After the scene, use the door-o-matic on the door. When you drop your things, pick up the second recorder and choose a channel.
